Buddhadharma : Fall 2013
Naropa University is pleased to announce a new scholarship fund in honor of the university’s founder, Venerable Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. The Chögyam Trungpa Scholarship is designed to attract prospective students who demonstrate exceptional academic promise. Three scholarships will be available each academic year. Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche transcended cultural barriers in transmitting the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism into contemporary Western culture. In his remarkable life, he made the journey from being the abbot of a remote Tibetan monastery to being a catalyst of spiritual renaissance in the West and one of the great “spiritual innovators” of the twentieth century. One of Chögyam Trungpa’s greatest accomplishments was the founding of Naropa University, offering a new model of higher education based on joining the study of traditional academic subjects with the cultivation of contemplative practices from world wisdom traditions. In 1974, at the convocation that inaugurated Naropa University, Trungpa Rinpoche spoke of “reigniting the pilot light” of higher education in the West. He proclaimed, “Let East meet West and the sparks will fly.” Now entering its fortieth year, Naropa University has had a profound impact on the growing field of contemplative education and a transformative effect on the world through the creative, insightful, and effective actions of its graduates. The sparks continue to fly! Honoring Naropa’s Founder $100,000 will fully endow this effort—however, we aspire to raise at least $1 million as a lasting tribute to the founder, and as a meaningful way to impact students for years to come.
