There is a kind of challenge in real- izing that they are pointing at something. Since there will always be this tendency for things to get rigid, you should not miss the real message of lineage, which is that you yourself can find the essence; you can find what is really being pointed at. The real thing that is being pointed out, the real thing that is passed along in an outer form, is about going beyond the notion of right and wrong, or good and bad. It is about stepping more and more into groundlessness and realizing the wisdom of insecurity and “not knowing.” The fact that we turn this truth into a belief system is not in the teachings; it is just something that people do. If you listen to those teachings and really take them to heart, it is you who will find out. If you do those practices, it is you who will find out, just as the lineage people found out before us and then passed it on so that we could know. This is a general notion of lineage— the notion that wisdom does not get lost even in the darkest ages. SPRING 2003 the Future is now Thich Nhat Hanh explains that when we practice meditation properly, we live every moment in the Pure Land. Those who practice Pure Land, especially beginners, believe that the Pure Land is in the future. They think that we go there only when we die, and that we go in a western direction, the direction of extreme happi- ness. But people who have practiced Pure Land for a long time go more deeply. The Pure Land is not in the west or in the east, but right in our mind. When we practice meditation, and we practice properly, we practice in the Pure Land. Each breath, each step, each smile, each look can bring us happiness in the present moment. The Buddha, wherever he went, never left the Pure Land. If we can live in the Pure Land with each step, each breath, each smile, everything can give rise to the Pure Land. SPRING 2008 think twice Prior to giving a Vajrayana empowerment (abhisheka), Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche sent this message of caution to people think- ing about taking it. If you choose to receive the abhisheka from me, our relationship will be changed for a long time, if not forever. And I should warn you that, from a mundane point of view, there will be no equality in this relationship, and no negotiation! There are only two ways you might find solace. First, you might assume that I have compassion and kindness and that I will not mislead you, no matter what happens. But this doesn’t mean I’m promising you that I have any compassion or bodhichitta! Sec- ond, and more reliable, is the fact that I am a completely samsaric being, and because of my own insecurity and love for attention and fame, and my fear of developing a bad reputation, I’ll behave properly.
